The backpack engine attached to the pilot’s back is also known as a paramotor. It weighs between 20 and 40 kg. With this “load,” it is quite possible to take off and land on foot without additional devices. After a short run (typically about 3 meters), the wing unfolds and lifts the pilot along with the engine. After takeoff, the pilot settles into the seat and controls the flight using brake toggles and the throttle control (TCS).

Brake toggles are handles connected to the paraglider’s control lines. Almost all control of the paraglider wing is done with the left and right brake toggles. Additionally, the pilot can “steer” slightly by shifting their position in the harness and altering the center of gravity.

Paralet and Aeroshuttle - What’s the Difference?

On an aeroshuttle, the pilot uses their feet to control the wing This type of aircraft is distinct from a paramotor by the presence of a “cart,” which consists of a frame, chassis, pilot seat, and other equipment. Pilots no longer need to take off on foot or carry a heavy propulsion system on their backs. Essentially, the cart is a simplified module of a motorized hang glider.

For lifting such a structure, a regular paraglider wing is insufficient. Instead, a tandem paraglider wing or a wing specifically designed for such aircraft is used.

Using a cart not only eliminates the need for pilots to carry heavy equipment but also allows them to bring along a larger fuel supply and additional cargo. However, taking off and landing a paralet requires a flat surface with no significant irregularities and a minimum length of 30 meters.

Initially, the terms paralet and aeroshuttle referred to the same thing. Over time, however, these terms have come to represent different classes of equipment.

There are several key differences between a paralet and an aeroshuttle. Paralets use less powerful propulsion systems, typically paired with a tandem paraglider wing. The wing is controlled by hand (via brake toggles). Paralets have higher aerodynamic efficiency and maintain better gliding capability with the engine off. They are also more maneuverable but require greater pilot skill.

Aeroshuttles are equipped with more powerful engines, and wing control is shifted to the pilot’s feet. A larger parachute wing is used as the main flying surface. It is more stable and simpler to pilot.

The “dry” weight of these machines ranges from 90 to 150 kg. In terms of flight characteristics, paralets and aeroshuttles do not differ significantly from paramotors. Their speed ranges from 40–60 km/h (25–35 mph). The altitude can reach up to 5,500 meters, though most flights on paralets and aeroshuttles occur at altitudes between 150 and 500 meters.

The cost of such an adventure is relatively modest, starting at 1,000 rubles for a 10-minute flight. Usually, the same aero clubs will offer training courses for piloting paragliders and motorized paragliders.

Many skilled enthusiasts buy components separately and assemble motorized paragliders or paramotors themselves. This approach can save you around half of the total cost.
