  4. A New Type of Skateboard: RollerSurf, Waveboard, or Ripstick.

RollerSurf - A Two-Wheel Skateboard

The RollerSurf is very similar to a skateboard , but instead of being a solid board, it consists of two platforms connected by a torsion bar. Unlike a skateboard, the RollerSurf has two polyurethane wheels, each attached to the axle of its respective platform. The wheels can rotate 360 degrees thanks to a caster-style suspension.

High-strength yet lightweight plastic is used to make these boards; in some cases, the platform can also be made from wood (Canadian maple). The wheels are made from polyurethane, known for its durability, resistance to wear, and shock-absorbing properties. The suspension components are crafted from steel and aluminum alloys.

This board also goes by many other names, based on its riding style or trademark branding: streetboard, snakeboard, skate surf, two-wheel skateboard, casterboard, vigorboard, ripstick, and waveboard.

The name RollerSurf became synonymous with this unique board due to the major manufacturer Rollersurfer (USA).

Manufacturers and Prices

RollerSurf is of American origin, so the primary manufacturers are based in the United States. The company Rollersurfer Ltd. offers a wide range of models with various shapes and designs, from classic boards suitable for riders of any level to advanced models for carving and high-speed riding. These are likely the most expensive items on the Russian market, priced at 2500 to 5200 rubles per piece.

The company Razor also specializes in making roller boards under the Ripstick brand – their models come in a broad range of colors, including a pink RollerSurf specifically designed for girls. Ripstick boards for juniors (weighing up to 35 kg) are priced around 1000 rubles. Classic Ripstick RollerSurf boards cost approximately 1300–2000 rubles, while trick models are available for 3000–3500 rubles.

Two-wheel skateboards under the Power brand are priced in the mid-range category, at approximately 1500–2000 rubles per board.

Riding a RollerSurf

How to Ride a RollerSurf How to Ride a RollerSurf A roller board provides a mix of unforgettable sensations. Its lightness and excellent maneuverability make it particularly appealing to active riders – there’s a variety of thrilling tricks one can perform!

The riding technique for this unique board resembles the movements of a surfer or snowboarder more than a skateboarder. The position of your feet on the RollerSurf is perpendicular to the direction of movement. To move forward, you don’t need to constantly push off the ground with your foot. You only push off once to place your second foot on the platform, and then the board can continue moving for an extended period.

The device’s design allows each platform to twist independently along its length, giving the RollerSurf much greater mobility compared to a skateboard. This enables the rider to perform maneuvers or propel forward without lifting their feet off the board. The RollerSurf moves smoothly and softly, making turns and pivots easy to execute.

To start moving or perform various maneuvers, the rider alternately presses their toes and heels onto the platforms.

The leading foot can remain stationary while the other foot oscillates the rear platform back and forth; alternatively, the rider can press their toe onto one platform and their heel onto the other.

Rotational movements with the hips and legs will generate acceleration.

One of the advantages of riding a RollerSurf is that it can move both quickly and slowly. By making gentle, wave-like movements with their legs and torso, the rider can ensure the board glides smoothly.

How to Learn to Ride a RollerSurf

Two-Wheeled Skateboard Two-Wheeled Skateboard At first, it might seem that mastering this complex contraption is impossible – yes, it’s difficult, but it doesn’t require superhuman abilities. Remember, we all learned to ride a two-wheeled bicycle as kids – it seemed incredibly hard! All you need is a little patience and coordination practice. Balancing on a two-wheeled skateboard is more challenging, but that’s also what makes riding this gadget so intriguing! If you have experience in surfing or snowboarding, it can significantly speed up the learning process of riding a waveboard.

First, you need to find a spot for your initial attempts. A flat surface is ideal – this could be a sidewalk, a park path, or a gym floor. The main task is to place one foot on one platform, bring the other foot onto the second platform, and start moving. At first, it’s better to use something for support, like a fence or a bar, or you can ask a friend to spot you. Over time, you’ll learn to keep your balance without external help – just push off with the second foot and place it in the middle of the rear platform.

For outdoor winter activities, it’s also recommended to use thermal underwear. On this page , you’ll find tips on how to buy it.

Position the waveboard in front of you and place your leading foot in the center of the front deck. While holding onto the support, place your second foot on the other part of the platform and lightly push off in the direction of movement. You might not roll more than half a meter on your first try, but if you manage to keep your balance for even a split second, you’re on the right track.

During subsequent attempts, while standing on the board with both feet, use the foot on the rear platform to flex and extend your ankle, and the board will start to move! Repeat these attempts until your body “learns” the correct movements to maintain balance.

If you’re struggling to generate movement, try rotating your hips and making wave-like motions with your upper body until you gain enough speed to get the board moving. After a couple of hours of practice, you’ll be able to ride straight in both directions! Once you’re comfortable with that, you can start setting yourself more challenging goals. Riding a waveboard is an excellent workout for all muscle groups, especially the skeletal muscles involved in maintaining balance.

It’s advisable to wear protective gear when riding a waveboard – knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a helmet.
